Why your oily skin can feel dry…
Get to know your skin…
Skin type vs Skin Condition
Skin type is the type of skin you are born with i.e. genetic makeup, hormones. Skin types can change with age and medications.
Skin condition is how your skin is affected by weather, allergies, skincare products, foods (diet) etc.
Dehydrated Skin vs Dry Skin
Dry skin types lack oil production. Our skin naturally secrets sebum (oil) from sebaceous glands acting as a sealant and protectant. Oily skin types tend to produce more sebum than normal skin types do.
Dehydrated skin ultimately lacks water. Skin is an organ - it needs water! Water-based cells make up layers of our skin. The stratum corneum (top layer of skin) is kept protected by lipids and sebum. When this top layer is compromised (dry weather, stripping products) our skin can become dry, flaky, tight or even itchy due to loss of hydration.
For those with oily skin the lack of water can lead to the skin producing more oil in an attempt to protect itself. Thus the vicious cycle of an oil /dry skin.
To assist with properly hydrating oil/ dry skin use serums that contain hyaluronic acid or gel moisturizers that act as humectants ( binding moisture to the skin). Believe it or not oils are also great for oily skin. Jojoba oil helps balance oil production while aloe , geranium , tea tree and lavender essential oils anti- bacterial properties help to treat and soothe acne prone oily skin.
Don’t let your skin suffer due to the elements or aggressive products. Remember to keep your oily skin quenched and balanced.
